New Improved Charting

Posting here after a long time. Mostly because I didn't feel like posting anything due to the downtrend in the markets. But now that things are improving, let me showcase the improvements I have made in the charts.
The chart has now 4 different panels. One for the master, one for the chart, one for news related to the stock being charted, one for portfolio pie-chart. I have also added user ID column everywhere so that others can add ther portfolios and track. But since its a client server thing only one of my colleagues uses it. Plan is to bring it on the web. Have started a small one, but its at a very nascent stage. You can check it out here.. http://rajarech.s43.eatj.com/MySite/showportfolio.jsp?UserID=mitra&Password=mitra
Basically there is a login screen which redirects to this screen based on the user Id. This page auto-refreshes every 1 minute so that you get the latest updated values. The colors of rows become red if today's growth for any particular stock is negative. You can also view charts. Right now have linked to the NSE charts because the free server where I am hosting this site allows me only 5MB space which is insufficient for storing my data and builing my chart.
On the client-server front, I have added several features since the last time I posted here. One can now view previous day (intra-day) charts, for both stocks as well as portfolios. Have added volumes which gives a much better picture of the movements now. In the chart you can see the bright line is for the price while the dark one is for the volumes. On mouse movement over the chart the price, date and volume are displayed on the 1st panel. Have also added the news panel in which I get latest news from moneycontrol and if any news matches the keywords specified for the stocks then the news item are displayed. The pie-chart shows the portfolio stocks at their bought value (outer circle) and current value (inner circle).
Thats all for now.

Awesome Friday the 13th

I feel I am the devil. And you would too, if your lucky day was Friday the 13th and the likes and if you are unlucky especially on auspicious days. If you look at the chart for my portfolio since yesterday, it has been growing well. And even though while coming in today morning I had a stomach wrenching need to sell off some stocks and then pick them up later in the evening I resisted myself. Thankfully so, as the prices have gone up.

For Monday
SYMBOL Type Buy Price
ARL 3 2.54999995
RCF 3 65.0999985
FCSSOFT 3 97.4499969
SELMCL 3 570.75

I haven't Ideated that yet

With the onset of rains, the temperature has become quite pleasant. I don’t think A/Cs would be required now for atleast 2-3 months. We are keeping the fans also at lower speeds. Thinking of which I wondered whether the resistor in the Fan regulator consumes a lot of energy. Where does that energy go? Ofcourse you would say, it become heat. But why heat, why not some other usable form of energy. Why not charge a rechargeable battery so that it can be used later. Need to research more on this.

I am still trying to think of a viable idea to start a business. The easiest pick is writing a software. But with so many software companies writing softwares for everything on this earth, my mind feels boggled at what I can provide new. Here's something that came to my mind which would be useful for a niche market - College going guys and bachelors who go out regularly with friends. Remember all those times when you go out with your friends to have a Friday night party and then when it comes to paying the bill all of you start calculating how much each has to pay. Some guy says I will pay you later, while someone else bunches up with 2 others and pays for them while having a mutual understanding that those guys will pay him back sometime. I am thinking I will make a small spreadsheet like program for mobiles that can be easily transferred and installed through bluetooth. And then you can keep track of all these transactions in you mobile. One guy pays and creates a bill for everyone. With mobiles, its nota difficult task as all numbers of your friends are stored and you can retrieve info name-wise. Will start work on this soon.

Portfolio Manager

My portfolio manager now looks like this.

I can click on the stock name and the inrta-day chart pops up. When I right-click the day-end chart is drawn. From the charting tool I can anyways look at the portfolio as well.

The markets fell considerably today, and there is a prediction made by some wall street guy that Sensex will go down to 13000. So really no idea how things will hold up.

For Friday's predictions:
SYMBOL Type Buy Price Current Price Growth
VARUNSHIP 1 77.47093 73.15 -0.055774856
HCLTECH 2 313.7495 297.15 -0.052906857
MPHASIS 2 247.2343 249.6 0.009568656

Quite dismal performance, but looking at the way the market has tumbled, I dont mind the average 3.3% loss rate. But all said and done, I think this is an opportune time to get into the market and get some solid stocks under your belt.

For tomorrow watch out for

SYMBOL Type Buy Price
VARDHACRLC 3 5.85
JKPAPER 3 35.875

These being type 3 stocks have a higher chance of going up (although they had already gone up from the Buy price by today's end of trade).

My new charting tool

I can draw instant charts on day-end prices or intra-day prices for any of the stocks. I can do so using the internal ID I use in my programs or using NSE symbols. The symbols combo box is auto-complete enabled and it also auto-populates the id text box and vice versa. If you scroll your mouse over the chart, the date and the price are shows on the left bottom corner along with the symbol. You can draw multiple charts on the same canvas to compare. The canvas gets cleared if you shift from intra-day to day-end. You can alternatively clear the canvas using the clear button.

Stocks for Monday...

SYMBOL TYPE Buy Price

HCLTECH 2 313.7495

Hopefully the stock markets wont go down further now.

Looming darkness

Although I write about the stock markets, but the subject line above is equally likely for the skylines of Mumbai nowadays. It rained last evening and I got nice hot pakoras at home along with a cool cheeku milkshake. Morning also saw quite a bit of rain and then now again it has started raining after a longish darkening of the skies. It seems the stock market is also playing hide and seek today, going up and down with the whims and fancies like that of the rain Gods of Mumbai.

GAIL which had gained considerably yesterday after the fuel price hikes, has come down again. 3i-infotech a stock I take small amount of pride in buying, was up considerably since yesterday, but now again its moving downwards.

Nowadays, I am trying to link my new portfolio tracker with a charting prorgam so that I can track intr-day as well as day-end data charts. I would also like to create a chart for my portfolio on similar lines. But still rgappling with the java coding of swing and graphics. Tried to install iReport for jasper reports yesterday, but couldn't make head or tail of it. Although it gives a lot of good options of creating charts. Would appreciate if someone could give me a good tutorial link.

In the next phase, I will start with Fundamental analysis. I am already capable of downloading online news. Will have to make more advances in these two together, and then will need to link this with the technical analysis.
